Adventures in MFW: Week 5

Here's a peek about what we learned about in Adventures this week

Bible: The memory verse for this week was John 8:12. We read other verses referencing Jesus as the Light of the World

Social Studies: The focus was Pilgrims this week. We learned about when they first arrived in America. The Pilgrims didn't have glass for windows so they oiled heavy paper instead. Buzz and Boo oiled paper and compared it to regular paper.

We made Pilgrim hats out of fudge strip cookies and mini Reese's cups. I saw the idea on To Show Them Jesus

We also learned about how Squanto taught the Pilgrims to plant fish along with corn seeds to help them grow. The Adventures manual had suggested planting corn seeds with fish as a hands on project, but I decided to go a different direction ;) Crushed up Oreos and chocolate pudding for the dirt, a yellow m&m for the seed and swedish fish for the fish.
We enjoyed our snack while watching "The Mayflower Voyagers" (Charlie Brown)

Science: We learned about stars this week. Buzz and Boo made constellations out of mini marshmallows and toothpicks. I saw this on To Show Them Jesus as well. Buzz loved doing it so much that he made every constellations he could find in our books and then made them all again for Daddy that evening!

Reading: Buzz started Dolphin Adventure this week

Boo finished The Reading Lesson this week!

She also started Andi's Fair Surprise

Read-Aloud: Henry Huggins

Extracurriculars/Family Stuff: Boo started taking horseback riding lessons last month and is totally in love! During her lesson this week the instructor let her ride off the lead rope for the first time (as in my little bitty five year old controlling a big horse all by herself!) She was beyond excited and proud!

Adventures in MFW- Week 4

Here's a peek at what we learned about in Adventures this week:

Bible- The memory verse for this week was John 8:12 "I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will never walk in darkness, but will have the light of life."

To help us remember that Jesus is the Light of the World, Buzz and Boo both decorated candles that we set on the table and lit during dinner each night.

They also made lightswitch covers for their rooms

Social Studies- We learned about Native Americans this week by reading North American Indians. Both kids really enjoyed the book a lot! We also made model tepees and wigwams.

We have these Indian and Settlers toobs, so the kids used them along with the models to act out scenes.

Science- We talked about space and the kids were excited to share with me what they remembered from our space unit last year. The First Encyclopedia of Science is internet-linked and there were some fun links on the website that the they enjoyed checking out.

We also talked about gravity and did an experiment. We started with a nickel and a piece of tissue paper cut into the shape of a nickel. Both were dropped from the same height and we talked about why the nickel dropped faster.

Then we put the nickel and the tissue paper each in identical tupperware containers and dropped them. We talked about why even though the weights were different the two containers dropped at the same rate.

Reading-
Buzz finished The Littles this week

Boo is working on Andi's Indian Summer

Read-Aloud-
The Story of Dr. Dolittle

Extracurriculars/Family Stuff- In one of the classes that Buzz is taking at co-op they are learning about the Amazon Rainforest. The teacher told them last week to think about some fruits that might grow there. Buzz decided to do some research and make a poster to bring to class. He was so excited to bring it to share today!

Buzz also got his award for reading 100+ hours in the library summer reading program!

Adventures in MFW- Week 3

Here's a peek at what we learned in Adventures this week:

Bible- Buzz and Boo made Jesus window posters by using an iron to melt crayon shaving between pieces of wax paper

Social Studies- We learned about Jamestown settlement

Science- We continued to talk about air this week. We did an experiment where we filled a cup with water and laid a piece of cardboard on top. Then we inverted the cup and cardboard and discovered that the water stayed in the cup because air was pushing up on the cardboard. This thrilled Buzz and Boo and they both tried it several times!

Reading-

Boo finished lesson 19 in The Reading Lesson and continued to read a chapter each day from Andi's Pony Trouble

Buzz is reading The Littles

Read-Aloud- We finished Charlotte's Web on Monday. As part of Adventures we are supposed to be reading Squanto, Friend of the Pilgrims during week 3 and week 4 but Buzz and Boo were begging for more so we finished it this week.

Extracurriculars/Family Stuff- We had our first official day of co-op today. It went really well! Boo gushed about how much fun she had and Buzz was very proud that he didn't get lost at all (first graders and up have to get themselves to their classes each period and the church is pretty large).

Buzz had his first soccer game of the season and had a great time!

And of course we've been spending a ton of time outside enjoying this beautiful fall-like weather.

Adventures in MFW- Week 2

Here's a peek at what we learned in Adventures in week:

Bible- Buzz and Boo took turns reading the Bible verses from the Discoverer's Bible. Boo is absolutely in love with this Bible! She takes it to bed with her every night.

They both started their Jesus posters this week too and will be adding to them throughout the year as we learn more about the names of Jesus.

Social Studies- We learned about Christopher Columbus and read aloud from American Pioneers and Patriots. Buzz is really enjoying it!

Science- We talked about air and did two different experiments. The first was waving a piece of cardstock to create air to move a piece of paper across a table. The science book suggested doing this as a race, which we did, bad idea for my super competitive kids. It turned into more of a lesson in discipline and self-control than science.

The second experiment was lowering an empty water bottle into a tub of water to see the air escaping the bottle as bubbles. Both kids thought this was pretty neat and tried it again and again. Plus this experiment didn't end in tears or timeouts- bonus!

Reading-

Boo is on lesson 19 in The Reading Lesson and also began Andi's Pony Trouble this week. This book is a big hit for my horse lovin' girl. (Shh... don't tell her but I've got the next three books in the series hidden in my closet for later this year)

Buzz finished The Bears on Hemlock Mountain (he gave it two thumbs up) and began The Littles

Read-Aloud- We finished Homer Price and began Charlotte's Web. Charlotte's Web has always been one of my favorite books so I'm loving that Buzz and Boo are enjoying it so much!

Extracurriculars/Family Stuff- Buzz started a homeschool art class this week and really enjoyed it! It's a ten week class with the first 5 weeks being drawing and painting and the last 5 weeks being pottery. While Buzz is at his class I have "girls time" with Boo and Bean. Boo is very excited about it!

Today we had the orientation for a co-op that we joined this year which starts next week. Buzz and Boo are both a bit apprehensive about it having never participated in anything like this on such a grand scale before (there are 280 kids participating!) so it was nice to take them on a tour to check everything out ahead of time.
